English Mastiff names are endless! There’s so many themes and angles you can take. Their size, personality and characteristics are all great places to start. But for this list, we thought we’d take a different approach and honour their long and ancient heritage. 

The Old English Mastiff breed has been in existence for thousands of years, deriving from the Molossian breeds. It was likely introduced to the UK by the Romans, but existed long before that. 

To help up come up with a suitable list of English Mastiff names, we’ve decided to take a range of different eras from its heritage, with an added bonus of the mythological giant (because … we wanted to). 

The eras range from Anglo-Saxon to War time. Brainstorming this list was fun!

Sure, you might be thinking Anglo-Saxon names are an odd choice for when it comes to naming a Mastiff, and you’d be right! But we all love a bit of flair and quirkiness when it comes to naming our pets and in honour of its ancient English roots, what could be more fitting than some classic Anglo-Saxon names.

Naming Advice – How to pick a name for your English Mastiff

You’ll see many owners pick themes to match the looks and characteristics of the breed. This is usually done to honour a particular trait such as intellect, size, coat or personality. 

When it comes to English Mastiff names many owners choose to pick a name that honours the size of the breed. Names such as “Brutus”, “Bear”, “Hercules” speak to size and strength. 

However, some owners prefer more traditional names to help humanise the dog. Examples will be names like Bella, Betty, George, Peter.  

There are many different roots you can take. What about naming after your favourite food, animal (mines a shark), a city? The options are endless! We find it helps to run through imagined scenarios where you’re having to shout your dog’s name out loud. Are you brave enough to yell “Leviathana don’t slobber all over my crotch whilst I’m eating my pizza”? Or does Keith sound more like it?
